Preface
This book is an expansion and update of an earlier book, entitled How to Read an English Newspaper, that I wrote to acquaint students of English on how they can improve their English skills by reading an English-language newspaper.
The reader reaction to that earlier book was guite favorable. However, as time passed, large portions of the contents of the book became outdated, thus making a major revision necessary.
In revising the book, I not only replaced many of the news articles but also added great amounts of information about how to make use of the English newspaper as a tool for learning English.
One major addition was a chapter on how to write newspaper English. It is hoped that this part of the new book will be a useful aid to students of journalism learning to write news stories.
I wish to thank all the people, including my students, who have played a role in the successful completion of this book. Some of the examples used to illustrate how to write newspaper English, for instance, were taken from my students' English, for instance, were taken from my students' papers.
Special thanks are due to Morton W. Belcher III, a colleague of mine at Fu Jen Catholic University. Morton is my mentor as well as a good friend. He not only encouraged me to finish the book promptly, but he also read my manuscript and gave me many helpful comments.
Suggestions from readers about how the book can be made more useful will be greatly appreciated.
