第二次世界大戰結束後,史托克豪森、布列茲等作曲家開始活躍於作曲界,為音樂創作帶來全新的語言。這些使用序列主義、電子音樂、機遇音樂、無調性音樂等創作技法,以超前觀念追求與傳統古典音樂大異其趣的音樂創作的作曲家,被稱為「先鋒派」。
當這些先進的藝術與音樂受到質疑的時候,DG在1968年發行了四盒套裝,每盒各六張黑膠唱片的先鋒音樂,收錄當時最前衛、最大膽與前瞻性的音樂。這系列的唱片不受制於審美觀,記錄當時實驗流派的管弦樂曲、室人樂、獨奏曲、電子音樂與即興創作。
為了慶祝先鋒系列誕生五十五週年,除了尊重史托克豪森遺產委員會放棄發行的意願而抽掉三張史托克豪森的作品,DG首度把這一系列的二十一張CD完整收錄。有多張錄音是首度以CD型式發行,包括李格第、凱基、貝里歐、卡格爾、諾諾、潘德列茨基、貝爾恩德‧阿洛伊斯‧齊瑪曼、許內貝爾、魯托斯拉夫斯基等知名歐洲與北美先鋒派作曲家,還有較不所知的費拉里、哥特弗里德‧麥可‧柯尼希、萊納‧瑞恩、佛斯、羅蘭‧凱恩、厄爾‧布朗的作品。
內附有186頁的解說冊,以英文和德文完整收錄原始出版品的內頁註釋,包括作曲家本人和專家的文章,以及DG檔案中的珍貴照片。
