作者簡介

威廉．史壯克（William Strunk Jr., 1869-1946）

　　康乃爾大學英語系教授，以著有暢銷英文寫作指導書《英文寫作風格的要素》（The Elements of Style）而聞名。1918年，本書以私人出版形式發行，主要用於課堂教學所需。久而久之，經過學生口耳相傳，逐漸在康乃爾大學校園成為人人熟知的英文寫作指南經典。

　　本書開宗明義，闡述構成英文寫作風格的基本要素，以及寫作時經常誤用的規則和用法，希望學習者在使用時能夠得到明確的提點，也希望讓教學者在教學時能方便引用，裨益於英文寫作的教學與學習。

　　史壯克1890年於辛辛那提大學取得學士學位，1896年獲得康乃爾大學博士學位。在康乃爾大學歷經46年教學生涯，共撰寫了兩本英語相關著作，除本書之外，另一本是1922年由康乃爾大學出版的《英語的格律》。同時，史壯克教授因編輯整理了莎士比亞、約翰．德萊登和詹姆士．菲尼莫．庫柏等人的經典作品而聲名遠播，因此在1936年受邀擔任米高梅電影《羅密歐與茱麗葉》的文學顧問。

　　William Strunk, Jr. first used his own book, The Elements of Style, in 1919 for his English 8 course at Cornell University. The book was published in 1935 by Oliver Strunk.

　　E. B. White was a student in Professor Strunk’s class at Cornell, and used “the little book” for himself. Commissioned by Macmillan to revise Strunk’s book, White edited the 1959 and 1972 editions of The Elements of Style.
