In an area previously levelled to make way for an opencast mine, Haus Mödrath is a 19th century villa opened in April 2017 as a centre for contemporary art. The classicist mansion and the surrounding park are both part of a project that aims to unite nature and culture. The inaugural exhibition curated by Veit Loers extends across the building’s four floors, boasting a total area of 1000 square metres. It will be on display until November 2018. Instead of putting on a static group exhibition, the curator invited a number of contemporary artists to move in as temporary subtenants, or ’Aftermieter’ as they used to be called in German. While the usual furnishings have been removed, the pictures and objects that can be found both inside and outside are arranged in a way that offers surprising perspectives on the contemporary art scene. Exhibition: Haus Mödrath, Kerpen - April 23rd, 2017 - November 15th, 2018. Text in English and German.
