Scholars have recognized Blanche Lilian Sauter (1864-1924) as sister of the noted British author John Galsworthy, mother of the artist and poet Rudolf Helmut Sauter (1895-1977), and wife of the distinguished painter Georg Sauter (1866-1937). The time has come to recognize Lilian Sauter fully in her own right-- as the poet and suffragist she was-- through a critical edition of her slender but significant 1910 work Through High Windows. This new edition of Through High Windows draws on archival and published sources to surface Sauter’s literary character in the broader context of her pre-war life, her marriage to Georg Sauter, her psychological trauma of the First World War period, and her health and family life during the post-war years.
