Born in Henderson, Kentucky, the author was educated at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and the University of Illinois, Urbana. Before his retirement, he taught at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Western Australia. He now resides in Perth, Western Australia.
