The Great Pizza Debate: New York vs. Chicago
There is no denying that the United States loves pizza. As of 2023, the country was home to more than 80,000 pizzerias. And, according to some estimates, the average American will eat a whopping 6,000 slices in their lifetime. Considering pizza’s popularity, it isn’t surprising that people have strong opinions on the subject. Some discuss which toppings are the most delicious or argue over which restaurant sells the best slice. However, there is one debate that rages more than any other: New York or Chicago?
New York–style pizza is older than Chicago-style pizza. Most sources say that it was invented in 1905 by Italians Gennaro Lombardi and Antonio “Totonno” Pero. In New York’s Little Italy neighborhood, they opened a restaurant that sold oven-baked pizza for just five cents a slice. This restaurant was so successful that pizzerias soon began opening all over New York. For nearly 40 years, New York–style pizza had no competitors. But all that changed in 1943 when business partners Ike Sewell and Ric Riccardo opened Pizzeria Uno in Chicago. Here, they sold creations that were nothing like the pizzas found in New York. With this, a decades-long pizza war started.
What are the differences between the styles? Well, New York–style pizza has a flat, thin base that’s crispy on the edges. It’s covered with a single layer of light tomato sauce, followed by a layer of cheese and other toppings. In contrast, Chicago-style pizza—also known as deep-dish pizza—has a much thicker crust with edges that are up to three inches high. It has multiple layers of cheese, chunky tomato sauce, and other ingredients like Italian sausage.
People who favor New York–style pizza argue that it is the original and therefore the best. Additionally, they praise its convenience, pointing out that you can grab a slice and eat as you walk. To eat Chicago-style pizza, on the other hand, you need to be sitting down with a knife and fork. In response, lovers of Chicago-style pizza claim their pizza is more filling. They say the deep-dish crust allows more flavors to be packed in and that New York–style pizza is more of a snack than a full meal.
