Foxconn Steps Out of Its Comfort Zone as It Enters the EV Market

It’s the company best known for making iPhones for Apple, but Foxconn has a bold, new plan—a plan to diversify away from consumer technology and to become a global player in EVs. And we’re here at Foxconn’s annual Tech Day conference here in Taipei to find out more.
It’s the biggest day on the Taiwan tech giant’s calendar—a chance for Hon Hai, better known as Foxconn, to show off their [its] latest achievements. And here at their [its] 2023 Tech Day, that means electric vehicles.
Foxconn is one of the world’s largest smartphone makers, producing about 70% of iPhone shipments globally, according to Fubon Research. But in recent years, the company has begun expanding into designing and making EVs, unveiling its first models in 2021. It comes as Foxconn attempts to diversify amid a global slowdown in the smartphone sector.

With ambitions of becoming a global EV player, Foxconn has enlisted the help of chip giant NVIDIA. Sharing the stage at the October event, the heads of both companies announced a new alliance to build so-called artificial intelligence factories.

There will be smart factories that build cars. There will be smart factories that build AIs.

They say these AI data factories could shape the future of smart cars. Foxconn says it will build these new kind of data centers using NVIDIA chips to power a wide range of applications, including cars that drive themselves.
How much of an edge is it going to give your company to become a global EV player?

We will work together and … to put these AI factories together with the software and the hardware, [you] know, created by these two companies to service whoever and whatever the application needs.

Foxconn wants to do for electric vehicles what it has done with smartphone manufacturing. It won’t sell these vehicles under its own brand, instead partnering with clients around the globe to build them, like this SUV designed by Foxconn and branded by Taiwan carmaker LUXGEN. It will hit the roads in early 2024.
Analyst Kylie Huang calls the company’s EV pivot a logical one, saying the saturated smartphone market means there is less room to grow for the company. While the transition into the EV space will take time, analysts say Foxconn’s history as a consumer tech manufacturer could give it unique advantages.
To be a player in the EV market, what do you think is the biggest challenge for Foxconn?

Auto, initially, is [a] very, very close[d] ecosystem, so it’s [a] totally different culture compared to consumer electronic product[s]. So, what they are facing is totally different people [and a] totally different mindset. So, if you want to do the business with those conventional carmaker[s], you need to build their trust. But I think if they can get something going on, they can start to see the benefit from this kind of joint venture.

For now, Foxconn’s next move is to partner with more auto brands across the globe, cementing their [its] place in the EV world and ensuring more to celebrate here at next year’s Tech Day.

汽車最初是一個非常、非常封閉的生態系,所以跟消費電子產品比較起來,它是一個完全不同的文化。所以說,他們要面對的是完全不同的人和完全不同的思維。所以,如果你想和那些傳統的汽車製造商做生意,你需要建立他們的信任。不過我認為如果他們能夠有所作為,他們可以開始看到這種合資帶來的優勢。
