Welcome back to you. Wednesday of this week marking [marked] exactly 100 days to go now until this year’s Summer Olympics in the French capital city of Paris. On Tuesday, the iconic flame was lit in the historic birthplace of the Games—in ancient Olympia. The flame, embodying peace and hope, will now journey across Greece before heading to France. In a spectacular ceremony today—right here in ancient Olympia, the hometown of the ancient Olympics—the Olympic flame was lit today and has began [begun] its journey for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics this summer. The ceremony took place right here—right behind me at this very temple—where an actress dress[ed] as a high priestess lit the flame with the help of a concave mirror that uses the light, the rays of the sun. She then passed it on to the first torchbearer, and this is how the relay across Greece began. This is the first leg of the relay.
The flame will then be passed on in Athens to the French organizers, and from there, [it will] travel to France on a beautiful boat—on a beautiful, historic boat called the Belem, the crew of which was here with us in ancient Olympia today. It will arrive in Marseille, and then the second leg of the relay will begin.
And the flame will make its way to the most remote parts of the country, as it has many times before. It has a very long history of going anywhere—underwater, climbing Mount Everest—and it really … It is something that has been seen as a uniting feature, putting people—and places—together for many, many years.
It will eventually get to Paris for the opening ceremony. The French have promise[d] lavish Games. They have said that people will be allowed to gather along the Seine for the ceremony. It will be the first outdoor such [outdoor] opening ceremony if it goes ahead, although the French president, Emmanuel Macron, has said earlier this week that due to security concerns, there may be a plan B, so this plan may change. But what we have seen here in ancient Olympia is certainly that the relay has began [begun]. It’s on its way to France, and we will see how that ceremony there takes place.
