『禁止卡車轉彎--當地配送除外』
這一個標示或許有些難懂。旅行中難免會遇到租車的情況,不過應該沒機會使用到卡車。或許它不會直接和我們發生關係,但因為是經常使用的單字,所以讓我們一起來看看。這裡的「turn」是「轉彎」的意思。立有這個標示的地方,表示絕對不可以變換方向。Turn這個單字還有其他很多意思,經常使用的舉例如下。
「打開開關」turn on ←→ turn off「關閉開關」
「聲音轉小」turn down ←→ turn up「聲音轉大」
「提出」turn in/in turn「照順序」
另外,會話中經常使用的表現方式也舉例如下。

˙Whatever turns you on!(真是太沒趣了。)
truck就是「卡車」的意思,在英國「卡車」是使用lorry這個單字,美國則是用tank truck。在這裡希望大家一起記住的還有track「競技場」這個單字。順帶一提field and track是「田徑比賽」的意思。except是「除了」的意思。同樣包含有除外涵義的單字還有but,不過except比but更能強調「除……之外」的觀念。就其他用法的不同而言,只有but可以在“none”“all”“nobody” “anywhere”“everything”這類單字上,或用於“who” “where” “what” 等疑問詞之後。一起來看看例句。
˙I like all vegetables except spinach.
(我喜歡所有蔬菜,除了菠菜之外。)
˙There is nobody here but me.
(除了我,這裡沒有別人。)
