A French（法國的） lady was going aboard a ship from a city to another in America with her maid（女傭）, who was carrying the lady’s child in her arms.

As the ship came near to the seashore, it began to slow down. The maid walked to the side of the ship（船） to look over （看向遠方）, when suddenly the child sprang out（跳出）of her arms and into the water below.

The mother was frightened（嚇壞的）and nearly mad（生氣）. The sailors（水手）began to lower a boat. The baby was drowning! What was to be done? Hearing the cries of the mother, a gentleman who was reading in another part of the ship came quickly forward and said, ”Can you give me something the child has worn?” The maid gave him a tiny apron（圍裙）, which had been left in her hands as she tried to save the child from falling. The gentleman turned to a dog that stood near, looking up into his face. He pointed first to the apron, and then to the spot where the child had sunk（下沉）.

Very quickly the noble dog sprang into the river. Soon the dog was seen far away with something in his mouth. Bravely（勇敢地） he swam against（對抗） the strong stream, but it was feared that his strength would soon give way . People on board cried（哭叫） for joy as the boat reached him and the sailors drew the child and the dog from the water.

When they were brought on board, the mother was happy to see that her baby was alive, saying, ”Oh, sir, I must have this dog! I will give anything for the dog that has saved my darling’s（愛人的） life!” The gentleman smiled, ”I am very glad, Madam（女士）, that Hector has been of service（服務） to you; but I would not part with him for anything in the world.” And meanwhile（同時）, the dog gave his sides a shake（搖）and lay down at his master’s feet, as if saying, ”No, master（主人）, nothing shall part（分離）us!”
